B-52 bomber (landing) at U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield U-Tapao was an important forward operating base for the United States Air Force (USAF) during the Vietnam War. Prior to 1965, U-Tapao was a small Royal Thai Navy airfield. At Dong Muang Air Base near Bangkok the USAF had stationed KC-135 air refueling tankers from Strategic Air Command (SAC) for refueling The general became vice commander of the 449th Bombardment Wing at Kincheloe Air Force Base, Mich., in June 1971 and commander the following year. In April 1973 he was assigned to Southeast Asia for duty as commander of the 310th Strategic Wing, U-Tapao Royal Thai Naval Airfield, Thailand. Once was 2 or 3 days TDY in support of the AFRS station (no orders, just grab tools, jump a plane and go), and once catching hops around Thailand heading from Korat to U-Tapao. The only flight to BKK was a little 2 seat plane with an LTC as pilot. I was stationed at U-Tapao AB in Nov 1968 through Nov 1969 as a Security Police Sentry Dog Handler. I was finally granted compensation for my Type 2 diabetes. The United States Air Force (USAF) deployed combat aircraft to Thailand from 1961 to 1975 during the Vietnam War. Today, USAF units train annually with other Asian Air Forces in Thailand. Royal Thai Air Force Bases are an important element in the Pentagon's "forward positioning" strategy.
